How to create business items

Quickstart tutorial 2-How to create business items

How to create business items

Introduction

Business items are any business documents, work products, or commodities that are used in business operations. You can model as a business item anything that is created, assembled, inspected, tested, modified, or worked upon. Business items undergo changes and are passed from one process step to the next.

Business items are different from resources. While resources are the people, equipment, or material used to perform a task, business items are the entities that the resources perform work on. For example, a customer order is a business item, while the sales associate that acts on the customer order is a resource. The customer order will undergo changes as it is passed through an order handling process: the order is stamped with the date that it is received, notations are made to the order if a particular product is out of stock, and the order is stamped as completed when the products are shipped to the customer.

Quickstart Finance is in the business of lending money to customers who meet the company's standards of acceptable credit risk. When the company receives a loan application, it is sent to a loan officer for review. The loan officer assesses the credit risk, and then makes a decision to either lend the customer the requested funds or turn down the application.

In this module, you will create the business items that represent loan applications, disbursed funds, and e-mail notifications in theQuickstart Finance loan application process. After completing this module, you will be able to create the following elements:

  • Data catalogs
  • Business item templates
  • Business items
  • Business item instances
  • Attributes for templates, items, and instances

A data catalog is a container where you can store your business item templates, business items, and business item instances.
  2. Creating a business item template
Business item templates are categories used to model groups of business items that share common properties.
  3. Creating a business item
Business items are those items that are passed from one activity to the next in business operations. You can model as a business item anything that is created, assembled, inspected, tested, modified, or worked upon.
  4. Creating a business item instance
A business item instance is a specific occurrence or example of a business item. A business item instance can be used as sample data for business items within simulations.
