How to associate a business item with a connection

Introduction Associating a business item with a connection enables you to pass the business item between elements in your process flow.
Business items are any items that you use in business operations. You can model as a business item anything that is created, assembled, inspected, tested, or modified, such as documents, work products, or commodities. Business items undergo changes and are passed from one process step to the next.
A particular business item, the application itself, is passed along through the loan application process until a decision is made on whether to approve or reject the customer's request for a loan. If the loan is approved, a Funds business item is output from the Disburse Funds task. If the request for a loan is rejected, an E-mail Notification business item is output from the Reject Application and Notify Customer task. You need to associate these business items with the appropriate connections in your diagram to accurately represent the real-world business items in your process.

Step 1

  1. Right-click a connection and select Associate Data...

Step 2

  1. Click the Basic type or Complex type radio button as required.
  2. For Basic type, click on the drop-down and select the type.
  3. For Complex type, find the required the business item in the tree and click to select it (i.e Application)
  4. Click OK.
  5. The business item (i.e Application) is now displayed in the diagram next to the connection, indicating that this business item is passed between these two activities.

Step 3

  1. Using the same method, associate the Application business item with the Review Loan Application task > Approve Loan? decision connection: The diagram automatically adds the Application business item to the Approve Loan? decision > Disburse Funds task connection and the Approve Loan? decision > Reject Application and Notify Customer task connection.
  2. Using the same method, associate the Funds business item with the connection between the Disburse Funds task and the diagram's right border.
  3. Again, using the same method, associate the E-mail Notification business item with the connection between the Reject Application and Notify Customer task and the terminate node.
  4. Click File > Save to save the process.
