How to create a resource

Quickstart tutorial 1-How to create a resource

How to create a resource

Introduction

A resource is a person, piece of equipment, or material used to perform a task or a project. Each resource is a particular occurrence or example of a resource definition and can be saved in your project.

How to create a resource

Add the following resources:

  1. Computers
    Desktop Computer No. 27
  2. Personnel
    Kim Lee

Step 1 - Personnel

In the Project Tree, right-click the Personnel resource catalog and click New > Resource. A wizard opens.

Step 2 - Personnel

  1. For the resource type, select the Individual radio button.
  2. From the Associated resource definition drop-down list (Predefined elements project), select Staff.
  3. In the Name of new resource field, type Kim Lee.

Remember that the name you enter must be unique within the Personnel resource catalog. If you had another Kim Lee on your staff, you would have to differentiate the two in some way (for example, by adding a middle initial to the second Kim Lee).
  4. In the Description of new resource field, type Loan department personnel.
  5. Click Finish.

Step 3 - Personnel

The new Kim Lee resource opens in the Definition editor. Note that the Definition editor shows the Costs tab by default. If you want to view the attributes that the resource has inherited from the resource definition (Staff), click the Attributes tab at the bottom of the Definition editor.

Step 4 - Desktop Computer

In the Project Tree, right-click the Desktop Computer resource definition that you created earlier in the tutorial and select New > Resource.

A wizard opens.

Step 5  - Desktop Computer

Notice that the resource type (Individual) and associated resource definition (Desktop Computer) values are filled based on the Desktop Computer resource definition.

  1. In the Name of new resource field, type Desktop Computer No. 27.
  2. In the Description of new resource field, type Loan department computer.
  3. Click Finish. The Desktop Computer No. 27 resource opens in the Definition editor. To view the attributes that the resource has inherited from the Desktop Computer resource definition, click the Attributes tab at the bottom of the Definition editor

Step 6 - Desktop Computer

The new Desktop Computer No. 27 resource opens in the Definition editor. Note that the Definition editor shows the Costs tab by default. If you want to view the attributes that the resource has inherited from the resource definition (Desktop Computer), click the Attributes tab at the bottom of the Definition editor.

How to add resource attributes

Introduction

Attribute values provide the unique characteristics of a specific resource.

All of the resources that are used at any company are uniquely identifiable and have characteristics that differentiate them from other resources, even ones that are very similar. For example, each loan officer has a first and last name, home address, and employee number. Similarly, each desktop computer has an identifying number and workspace location.

The combination of attributes for a particular resource serves as a unique identifier for that resource.

How to add resource attributes

Enter the specified attribute values for the following resources:

  1. Desktop Computer No. 27
  2. Kim Lee

The following steps below describe in detail how this is done.

Step 1 - Desktop Computer No. 27

  1. Double-click the resource  (i.e Desktop Computer No. 27) to display the Definition editor
  2. Click the Attributes tab at the bottom of the Definition editor.
  3. For the first attribute, ID Number, click the First Value field. (Note that depending on your screen size and settings, you might have to scroll horizontally to see this column.)
  4. Type the following identification number: 1027. Remember that because you designated this attribute's type as Integer in the resource definition, you can only enter numbers.
  5. Press the Enter key to add the value to your resource.
  6. In the WorkStation attribute row, click the First Value field.
  7. Type the following location number: LD705. This is the work station in your loan office where Desktop Computer No. 27, with the ID number 1027, is located.

Step 2 - Kim Lee

  1. Double-click the resource  (i.e Kim Lee) to display the Definition editor
  2. Click the Attributes tab at the bottom of the Definition editor.
  3. For the first attribute, profile, click the First Value field and type the following value: Loans - Level 1.
  4. For the employeeID attribute, click the First Value field and type the following value: loan1005.
  5. For the lastName attribute, click the First Value field and type the following value: Lee.
  6. For the firstName attribute, double-click the First Value field and type the following value: Kim.
  7. Continue entering attribute values for as many of the remaining attributes as you want.
