How to assign cost

Quickstart tutorial 1-How to assign cost to a resource

Introduction

A cost is the amount of money an organization must pay to use a resource in a task or process. Costs can be added to a particular resource in any process that you want to model.

Cost is often a primary "need to know" factor in a business model. Knowing what a particular process or resource costs, and what it might cost under different circumstances, is a key goal of business analysts.

How to assign cost to a resource

Step 1

  1. In the Project Tree double-click a resource (i.e Kim Lee resource). The resource opens in the Resource editor.
  2. Click the Costs tab at the bottom of the Resource editor.
  3. Click the Add button at the bottom of the Costs table. The Create cost window opens.

Step 2

Click the Cost per time unit radio button and then click OK. A cost is added to the cost table.

Step 3

  1. Click the Value field and type 17.50.
  2. Because you pay the resource (i.e Kim Lee) in U.S. dollars, leave the Currency field as is. If you wanted to indicate payment in a different currency, you would click in the Currency field and use the menu to find the appropriate currency.
  3. In the Cost Details section, leave the default as 1 hour. By selecting 1 hour, you have indicated that you pay the resource (i.e Kim Lee) US$17.50 per hour. Your cost page for the resource3 (i.e Kim Lee resource) should now look like the one in the following image (right column).
